Overcoming Your Fears: Speaking to New People
Ever found yourself talking to someone new and feeling like a ball of nerves? Or perhaps you’ve been in a situation where there was enough awkwardness to fill the room?
We’ve felt like that before.
Speaking to someone for the first time can be difficult, even for the most eloquent of conversationalists. But fret not, we’ve compiled some tips to help overcome the fear!
First off, ask yourself:
Why are you afraid of talking to someone new?
Perhaps…
1) Are You Unsure of How They Will Respond?
We can’t control how people will respond to us, but we can do our part by engaging them with warmth and helping them feel at ease by lightening the mood or being welcoming.
Warmth breeds warmth; being friendly disarms and endears!
2) Perhaps, You’re Intimidated By Their Competence?
You, too, are someone with things to offer!
It might be perspective, experience, networks, or skills. We all have unique experiences and views that we can bring to the table. Believing in your own value can give you the courage to engage with someone new, regardless of who they are.
3) Are You Shy or Unsure of How to Start a Conversation?
Start simply by saying hello and asking a question about the person themselves! Finding a conversation topic starts from being curious and interested in the person in front of you.
Secondly, remember:
Conversation is a skill that, like all others, can be learnt and honed with practice.
Know that it is totally natural to feel nervous when interacting with someone new. Be kind to yourself and remind yourself of the value of the connection you might receive through getting to know a new friend.
Finally,
Be authentic and genuine in your interactions.
The person you’re speaking to will appreciate this and might feel more comfortable opening up!
If the conversation turns our awkward, it’s okay. You tried and you will learn and improve through as you go!
We hope these pointers encourage you to step forward and form new, meaningful connections with others. Keep on keeping on!
