Navigating Constant and Seasonal Friendships
It’s undeniable that friendships play a crucial role in our lives, whether they’re around for the long-haul (i.e. constant friends), or only for a certain time (i.e. seasonal friends).
Constant friends, seasonal friends … these concepts boil down to the duration, intensity, and depth or our friendships and interactions.
However, the truth is:
Everyone has their own perceptions of who their constant and seasonal friends are.
Navigating these friendships can be tough, especially when two friends do not see their relationship in the same light. For example, someone you see as a constant friend may see you as a seasonal friend.
When perceptions appear to be in conflict, it can hurt because it may feel like the other person is not making time for you the way you would want them to.
In such troubling cases, it is important to try your best to respond appropriately and with kindness.
1) Make a conscious effort to extend empathy.
When you try to understand the other person’s perspective/current position in life, you can alter your response appropriately. You could even communicate your needs, expectations, and own perspective in a gentle manner, if you feel the need to.
2) Know that your worth is not diminished.
While it can be difficult facing an unreciprocated friendship/relationship that you value greatly, know that it does not make you any less of a person! You are a unique individual with so much to offer, and those who can see that appreciate you for being you.
3) Zoom out and give your friend space.
Perhaps your friend has other pressing issues on their mind, or they simply need space. Manage your own expectations and extend kindness while doing do — it will go a long way!
We can’t control the way others view us, but we can control the way we respond to them.
Seasonal or constant, friends are companions to share experiences in life with — both the ups and downs.
